Renewable energy supply for Regions Seven and Eight

GINA-October 4th 2005
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds will be leaving tomorrow for Regions Seven (Cuyuni/Mazaruni) and Eight, (Potaro/Siparuni) to commission two photo-volt electrical generating units (solar panels).

According to Project Coordinator Maxine Nestor, the venture was funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) at a cost of US$50,000 and is part of a renewable energy resource demonstration.

Representatives of the UNDP will also be accompanying the Prime Minister, along with other executing agents including the contractor and engineers.

One unit will be used at the Cato Hospital in Region Eight, to facilitate the use of medical equipment, lighting, refrigerator and other electrical appliances at the facility.

The other unit at Paruima in Region Seven, will be used to power an electrical mill. The mill processes beans, nuts and other value-added foods, and provides employment for a number of persons in the community.

Hundreds of residents will also benefit from a new diesel generator set, which is being installed in the community for house-to-house electricity supply.

The photo-volt units are part of Government’s thrust to explore alternative energy sources, in light of surging international fuel prices.

Among these is a wind farm at Good Hope on the East Coast Demerara, and a number of other options being considered, including hydropower, ethanol and bio-diesel.
