Police vehicle, bus crash will be probed - Alleyne

Traffic Chief Roland Alleyne said the accident involving a police vehicle and a minibus would be investigated like any other.

Alleyne said he knew of the accident, but had not been briefed on it. He said the accident was just one of several that would occur on the roadways on a daily basis.

On Monday, the police vehicle PHH 6665 collided with minibus BHH 467 at the corner of Camp and Lamaha streets. There were no injuries but the minibus, turned over after, eyewitnesses said, the police vehicle crashed into it.

Minibus driver, Gary Charles had recounted that he had just dropped off two passengers on Lamaha Street and was proceeding east when he felt an impact from behind and the bus turned over.

The police involved in the accident later accused Charles of “jumping” the traffic light at the junction, which is not working. A row later erupted between him and the ranks.

Charles later gave a statement to a traffic rank who was on the scene. However, he complained that the ranks did not make any marks on the road.

When Stabroek News visited the scene, the police vehicle had moved from the point of impact and was parked outside of Lee’s Funeral Home on Camp Street.

Yesterday, Alleyne said it was not a problem if drivers moved their vehicles from the point of impact. He said as long as they went back to the scene and marked the spot, it was quite alright.
