Local company should be given the job to erect new traffic lights

Dear Editor,

I am impressed by the work done by the local company which has put into operation traffic lights at the corner of Regent Street and Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown. This has brought some semblance of order at this particular intersection. This is also a good indication to us Guyanese that we still have a number of highly skilled citizens living here and at our disposal. My only hope is that our Government and Police Force would seize this opportunity to have this Company erect new traffic lights.

On Sunday, August 21, 2005 a 63 year old woman lost her life at the comers of Regent and Camp Streets.

On Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at about 7:30 a.m. there was another accident at the corner of Camp and Croal streets. It is clear that both of these accidents were as a result of lights not functioning at these intersections.

For too long our policemen have been trying to repair the existing system without meaningful success. It is time that we as Guyanese pool our energies, ideas and resources towards building our own nation.

I am tired and I am sure all patriotic Guyanese are weary of seeing our knowledgeable and highly skilled sons and daughters leaving our shores and contributing to the growth and development of other countries and their economies. If we are to move forward as a country we need to stand solidly behind and support our own. The time has come for our Government to demonstrate their willingness to encourage the growth of local companies knowing that job creation is critical and necessary at this time for us. How long will we continue to build and strengthen economies of other countries at the expense of our own?

I would have been delighted to see these lights in working order when schools reopen for it can often prove difficult for school children to use the roads at busy intersections.

Yours faithfully,

Simone Moriah
