A woman sleeping on the pavement was yesterday morning killed when two cars, both reportedly failing to stop at the critical intersection on Regent and Camp streets, collided and slammed into the pillars of Essential Shopping Centre at the corner.
Dead is 63-year-old, Petal Blair of Charlotte Street, Lacytown.
The woman, according to reports, had made her bed under the store on the Regent Street pavement when the vehicles crashed into her. Both of her legs were broken and she died before receiving medical attention.
An eyewitness to the crash which occurred around 3:30 am said the cars were travelling in opposite directions on Regent Street.
According to the witness from what he observed both vehicles were going at a fair rate and as they got to the intersection, no one seemed to have slowed down. The traffic lights at this intersection don’t work.
As a result one of the vehicles lost control and collided with the other. Both vehicles then slammed into the pillars of the shopping centre where they would eventually crush Blair who was fast asleep.   Â
The vehicles are in police custody.
Blair’s relatives told this newspaper that they last spoke to her around 2 am. They said despite having a home, Blair, who had a mental condition, would normally leave the house to sleep on the streets.
She would regularly occupy a spot under the store. She leaves to mourn two children.
Stabroek News was told that it was not the first time the woman was injured while sleeping on the pave. In February this year a 4×4 pick-up knocked her unconscious and broke one of her legs. She was hospitalised for a period before returning to the streets.
