Although the police traffic department was successful in fixing one set of traffic lights in the city recently, there are calls for them to be scrapped altogether.
“There is need for new lights in the city, modern lights,” Traffic Chief Michael Harlequin told Stabroek News when contacted on Monday. According to Harlequin, the current set of lights at several city intersections have been in existence for several decades and have outlived their usefulness. Many of the city traffic signals have for months been non-functional. According to the traffic chief, police from the traffic department are responsible for enforcing the law regarding compliance with the lights but some personnel have been trained also to maintain the systems. “It is just that some ranks have the technique to help in maintaining the lights,”, the traffic officer said while acknowledging that it has become a challenge owing to the condition of the equipment. Harlequin alluded to the success achieved by the police in effecting repairs to the lights at the junction of Vlissengen Road and the western end of Home Stretch Avenue.
But these lights become stuck at the slightest fluctuation of power while others remain beyond repair. Several months ago Stabroek News had spoken to a group of persons who had submitted a proposal to the police commissioner for new signals but nothing further has been heard of it. Harlequin while acknowledging the proposal said he was not certain about the feedback on the project since the group was tasked with supplying additional information. |
