New game: Spot the traffic light

When was the last time you saw a traffic light working in the city?

Probably only if you went to the junction of Homestretch and Mandela Avenues, one of the last surviving lights in town.

The rest are old and even vandalised and no one is doing anything to fix them. The results have been several accidents, mostly fender benders but some more serious including a couple at Camp and Lamaha Streets. Now motorists grope their way through busy intersections or police ranks spend precious man-hours directing traffic.

On Camp Street alone there are no lights working at Lamaha Street, Middle Street, Church Street, North Road, Robb Street, Regent Street, South Road, Croal Street, Brickdam and D’Urban Street.

Other intersections including those linking Vlissengen Road to Lamaha Street and Homestretch Avenue as well junctions along Main Street are also broken.

The Avenue of the Republic at the intersections of Robb Street, Regent Street, Croal Street and Brickdam is also bereft.

Every so often the signal at the corner of Sheriff and Duncan Streets works.

Traffic Chief Michael Harlequin had told Stabroek News several weeks ago that his department almost on a daily basis had been addressing several non-functioning traffic signals.

He had even identified one set at Sheriff and Garnett streets, which had been fixed by his department. These can now be added to the growing number out of order.

Harlequin reached on Friday said he would be attending a meeting shortly at the Ministry of Home Affairs on the issue.

According to Harlequin, the public may see some “action/activity” in this regard sooner rather than later.

Motorists would prefer it to be sooner with some complaining of chaotic scenes, and even incidents of road rage, as discourteous drivers bully their way forward.
